Dynamometer 101

Measuring Power on a dynamometer
Lesson Highlights

In the tuning world we hear a lot about dynamometers. Some swear by them, some hate them. Some measure power at the wheel, others at the crank. People use dyno’s for bragging rights, aiming for the highest peak numbers, others use them only to compare before/after results on the same day. What are these numbers and can you compare them with results from other dyno’s? Or even with the same dyno on another day? Let’s look at this in more detail.
In this short course we also take a more technical approach to see how these numbers are measured / calculated. What certain settings do and how some of these settings sometimes get misused to falsify results.

  • WHEEL HP VS CRANK HP
  • RELATION TORQUE AND HP
  • HOW DOES THE DYNO MEASURE HP AND TORQUE
  • CORRECTION FACTORS
  • WHAT COULD INFLUENCE THE RESULTS
